HHKB Studio: Why Was the ‘Black Ship of the Custom Keyboard World’ Born, Approximately 30 Years After the Birth of the First Model?

The pursuit of comfort in keyboards as an interface has persisted since computers became personal. Some people, in their quest for the ultimate typing experience, end up buying several tens of thousands of yen worth of keyboards. As a result of pushing the boundaries, some have arrived at the realm of custom keyboards.

One of the pioneers of so-called luxury keyboards is PFU’s “Happy Hacking Keyboard” (HHKB). Despite its compact size, its comfortable typing experience has captivated users, leading some to buy two units for home and office use or even purchase carrying cases for portability, demonstrating a dedicated fan base.

The latest addition to the HHKB lineup is the “HHKB Studio,” released in October 2023. While maintaining its rational key layout, the Studio incorporates a pointing stick and mouse buttons, and further enhances functionality by adding a gesture pad to the side of the body, making it a fully integrated solution.
