A while ago, the following post by a Twitter user who works as a clerk at a major convenience store chain in Tokyo became a hot topic.
<“Hey, wait! ”Convenience store cash register. Some people can’t wait for the e-money payment tone to sound and leave before the payment is made. Store clerks cannot leave the cash register immediately. But if I manage to escape, it’s my mistake and I’ll have to pay for it. “Okkyakusaaan! ” I screamed from the bottom of my lungs, but other customers stopped me. Please. Don’t panic, check it out. >
Due to measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, the number of stores that have introduced cashless registers has increased significantly over the past three years. However, the tweet said that there are also problems caused by customers leaving without checking the payment sound. So, we asked three major convenience store chains how many such customers they actually have.
“We have not confirmed that such cases actually occur or are increasing.” (Lawson Public Relations Department)
“When we first started barcode payments, there were problems such as the screen not being readable, but now that we have made some changes, we have heard that these problems almost no longer occur.” (Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd.) Public Relations Center)
“Staff members check on customers who use the self-checkout system, and if the payment has not been completed, we will notify them. Instructions for use are posted near the self-checkout register, but If you have any problems, please ask a store employee and we will guide you.” (FamilyMart Public Relations Department)
The three major companies mainly use “semi-self-checkout” systems, where store staff read barcodes and customers perform checkout operations. Therefore, there are no reports from the field that troubles like tweets are increasing. Additionally, if a customer leaves before making a payment, the store will end up incurring a loss, but store staff will not be forced to make up for the shortfall at their own expense.
