FamilyMart has begun a demonstration experiment to recycle empty containers of alcohol disinfectant

On March 11, 2024, FamilyMart announced that it would begin a demonstration experiment, in collaboration with Kao Professional Services, a subsidiary of Kao Corporation, to establish a system for promoting the recycling and reprocessing of plastic containers used in FamilyMart stores. The experiment will commence on March 13 in approximately 350 stores in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

In this demonstration experiment for plastic container recycling, used plastic containers from the stores will be collected using available space in the delivery trucks during store deliveries. After temporary storage at distribution centers, Kao will conduct assessments for reprocessing. These initiatives aim to simplify store collection, establish collection routes, and reduce collection costs.

The “Plastic Resource Circulation Promotion Act,” which came into effect in April 2022, aims to promote the collection and recycling of plastic products discharged by businesses. The importance of initiatives to circulate plastic as a resource has been increasing. At FamilyMart, staff members use alcohol disinfectant before starting work and after breaks, as well as during the preparation and sale of hot snacks and Chinese buns. The quantity of plastic containers used for this purpose amounts to approximately 40,000 units (about 2 tons) annually nationwide
