Protecting Factory Equipment from Cyber Attacks: Omron Strives to Enhance Security for All PLC Products

With the smartening and opening up of factories, cyber attacks have expanded their targets from the IT (Information Technology) domain to the OT (Operational Technology) domain. As a result of cyber attacks on factory control systems, various damages that undermine the foundation of manufacturing, such as production line stoppages, leakage of company assets such as production programs, and production of defective products due to data tampering, have occurred worldwide.

Cyber attacks targeting Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are also on the rise. The Stuxnet attack, which halted Iran’s nuclear facilities in 2010, sent shockwaves around the world, but similar attacks have been increasing year by year. In 2023, a cyber attack targeted Israeli-made PLCs managed by a water authority in the United States, resulting in damages.
