Three companies including Renesas have established a joint venture to build a semiconductor backend plant in India

On March 1, 2024, Renesas Electronics, along with CG Power and Industrial Solutions and Stars Microelectronics, announced the establishment of a joint venture to construct and operate an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) plant for semiconductor backend manufacturing.

The three companies have already signed a joint venture agreement, and on February 29 of the same year, the Indian federal cabinet approved the project of the joint venture company.

In the new joint venture, Renesas will provide advanced semiconductor technology and expertise, CG Power will be responsible for enhancing semiconductor manufacturing capabilities within India and building the ecosystem. Stars Microelectronics will handle conventional package technology, training, and talent development programs.

The shareholding ratio will be 92.3% for CG Power, 6.8% for Renesas, and 0.9% for Stars Microelectronics. Over the next five years, they plan to invest 76 billion Indian rupees (approximately 135.1 billion yen).

The joint venture will construct the OSAT plant in Sanand, Gujarat, India, manufacturing a wide range of products for automotive, IoT (Internet of Things), 5G, and other applications. They plan to produce packages ranging from conventional types like QFN and QFP to advanced packages like FC-BGA and FC-CSP, with plans to increase daily production capacity to 15 million units.
