March 20th was “Calculator Day”! Thinking about the history of Canon calculators celebrating their 60th anniversary and the future of calculators

Fifty years ago, on March 20, 1974, annual production of electronic desktop calculators exceeded 10 million units. In addition, March 20 marks the 10th anniversary of the birth of the first domestically produced calculator “CS-10A” (formerly produced by Hayakawa Electric Industries, now Sharp) (released on March 18, 1964 to be exact). Today was designated as “Calculator Day” by the Calculator Subcommittee of the Japan Office Machinery Industries Association (currently the Business Machinery and Information Systems Industries Association).

Ahead of Calculator Day, Canon Marketing Japan, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in the calculator business in October 2024, held a “Canon Calculator Business 60th Anniversary Press Briefing.” Canon Marketing Japan Consumer New Business Planning Department Chief Takeo Naga of the Consumer New Business Promotion Section looked back on the company’s history and talked about future prospects.
